Gallina Canyon Ranch offers the renters of Casita and Jacal the opportunity to take a guided tour of our privately owned canyon on horseback; our private property includes seven miles of canyon, and riders must stay on our private property. The minimum length for each tour is three hours, for one or two people, and costs $135 per person.

Each rider must sign a separate Waiver of Liability before riding.

Some notes and recommendations for riders:

  • Riders should be ready to mount their horses no later than 9:00 AM. For rides longer than three hours, the mount time will be earlier.

  • For horseback riding, you will find riding boots much more comfortable than hiking boots and tennis shoes. Shoes with heels are recommended; while street shoes and tennis shoes are allowed, we will not let anyone ride if they are wearing sandals or similar inadequate footwear.

  • Each saddle has a saddlebag to carry your personal items. You will want to bring a bottle of water, snacks if you wish, cameras, eye glasses, binoculars, and similar small items. You will want to make sure to bring carrying cases for these items if you have them so that they are not damaged while riding.

  • Long pants, preferrably denim, are highly recommended. Even though there are trails through the canyon, you will be riding through brush and trees.

  • You will wish to wear an undergarment, such as "long underwear," to make your ride more comfortable and help prevent chaffing.

  • You will want to bring sunscreen.

  • Rain can be expected in August and September, but it can fall any month. You will want a rain slicker or jacket if it looks like rain may fall, and it will be rolled up and tied to your saddle.

  • Our horses are trained to rein Western. Please talk with your guide and ask questions if you have questions about controlling your horse: a confused horse makes a poor ride.

  • We cannot accommodate riders who weigh more than 200 pounds.

  • Spurs and riding crops are not allowed.

  • A hat or helmet is mandatory.

Our horses are mature, well-behaved, and retired from the cattle-working business: if you have little riding experience, you are still welcome to ride. At all times the horses must be kept at a walk: this is for your safety and also for the safety of the horses.

To schedule a horseback ride during your stay you may contact us at horseys@hughes.net before you arrive, or you can talk with the guide when you arrive. There will be times when the guide will not be available, so it is best to write well ahead of time to schedule a ride.
